MDE-LIO contracts with a group of individuals who have skills and interest in the area of Braille literacy for students who are Braille readers.
Braille instructors of the team for the 2009-2010 school year include: Patricia Balassone, Nancy Jo Blucher, Dori Pratt, Julie Haase, Ted Lennox, Julie Unatin, Sharon Reigle, Sharon Rice, Kathy Roelofs-Jones, and Kathy Traster.
The team is focusing on three areas for the school year.
- Develop and teach a comprehensive regional Braille class that would be more conducive for parents.
- The goal of this six week class is to allow parents to gain the knowledge and skills they desire without having to take a 16 week Braille course.
- The six-week Braille course (for parents) is embedded within the 16 week regional Braille course allowing parents the choice to continue with their studies if they choose to do so. To learn more about the regional Braille course visit the Regional Braille Classes page.
- Develop and teach a 16 week regional Braille course.
- Create resources and tools to enhance the teaching of the course.

- Advise MDE-LIO staff on providing quality regional Braille instruction for educators, college students, and family members of a student with visual impairments.
